I heard Paul give this story.
Paul and John used to often meet over at Paul’s house to play guitars and just hang out until late at night. One time on his way home during the winter, John would see a family sitting outside of their house in the cold. Every time John passed, he would give a “Hi.” This happened several times.
Then, John asked Paul who that daft family was who lived at the top of the hill. Every time he goes home (remember, it’s very late and cold) he sees them sitting around in the cold late night, but they never say “Hi” back to him.
Out of curiosity, Paul followed John home and he, too, saw John pass by the family and give a greeting. When Paul got closer, he realized that all this time, John was saying “Hi” to a Nativity scene in front of a house.
What a lot of people don’t know is that John is practically blind as a bat without his glasses. As he often went without his glasses because they weren’t “manly,” that family he was passing and greeting was Joseph, Mary, Jesus, and the Magi.
