Is “Across The Universe” one of John Lennon’s best songs?

Written by on June 2, 2021

The question often comes up about the difference between John Lennon and Paul McCartney, they were exceptional together and separately talented. This is my take. Paul is a gifted composer who can effortlessly create melodic, memorable songs using a variety of styles and influences. John, on the other hand has the ability to compose a song, unrelated to anything that has been written before. Songs like I Am The Walrus and Strawberry Fields feel as if the had seeped through from a parallel universe, they are completely original.

The Lennon songs that fit the above description are ‘A Day in the Life’, ‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds’, ‘Glass Onion’, ‘Happiness is a Warm Gun’.

‘Across the Universe’ is always in my ever changing favourite top three Lennon/Beatles compositions. It’s breath-taking and transports you into a different space time and plane of existence. It is unique.
